Our 2nd annual Family Engineering Night will be on Wednesday, January 28th from 6:00 – 7:00!  Engineers are problem solvers & creative, and we are sure that we have a lot of future engineers at RV Elementary.    All RV Elementary families are invited to an evening of family sharing, family learning and a lot of family laughter as families work together to learn how to and solve problems together!!  A light dinner will be offered for $1 per family member that attends.  If you plan to come but haven’t returned the RSVP, please call the school on Monday to let us know so that we can plan the correct amount of food.   As always please call the school office if you have any questions.

Six Flags Read to Succeed:  Read to Succeed is a free program from Six Flags and Discovery Education.  RV Elementary will again be participating in this exciting program that encourages children to read for FUN!  Students have the opportunity to earn a free admission ticket valid at the Chicago Six Flags theme park.  All they need to do to earn the ticket is to complete 6 hours of recreational (FUN) reading between now and February 23rd.  All students K-5 are able to participate in this program.  An informational parent letter with reading log on the back was sent home on Friday January 23rd.  Your child will need to use this log sheet to record what and how long he/she reads.  Parents simply need to initial each entry, total the minutes read and sign the log before turning it in.  The only reading that doesn’t count is homework or assignment reading.  AR reading, comics, newspapers, magazines, books---all count as FUN reading.  Your child can read to you, or in the case of younger participants, parents can read to their child.  Reading logs will be due back at your child’s school on February 23rd.  Late logs will not be accepted.  Have FUN reading with your child.

Chronic Absenteeism in Berrien County
There’s a disturbing trend going on in Berrien County schools.  In a recent pilot study of 6500 students in grades K-5 it was determined that 24% of these students were absent ten (10) or more school days.  This trend of chronic absenteeism not only has a negative impact on student achievement but also affects the business climate and economic development for our state and increases the costs of adjudication/incarceration of students who do not graduate from high school.  Students in families with lower socioeconomic status are affected the most.  According to the study, the top three reasons for chronic absenteeism are: 1. Parent-diagnosed illness, 2. Medical/dental appointments, and 3., Parents who don’t understand the importance of school. This is where we need your help.

Please take a moment to view the two-minute video in two different formats explains the work of the Berrien County School-Justice Partnership so far:
